2012 was probably the most competitive BBC Sportsman of the Year line-up. Any number of nominees would have been shoo-in’s in other years. Andy Murray winning the first British Grand Slam title in years and capping it off with a home town Olympic Gold Medal. In fact, beating any of the top Olympic heroes in the year of an Olympics on home soil would seem improbable. You would think that everything would need to fall into place to achieve something to rise above all of that. Perhaps ‘fall’ into place is the right word for it as a dose of failure seemed just the right touch to Bradley Wiggins historic year crowned as the ultimate sporting hero in the country…
