The essential ingredient in scientific method to testing any hypothesis the ’Control Group’. The Control Group is an embrace of failure, because an experiment that is ‘successful’ in achieving its desired outcome is no success alone. It is only a success if a corresponding control group fails to achieve the same result.

It’s not just scientists that require a that require control groups for testing hypotheses (null or otherwise), but any business looking improve results with true acumen need apply the same principles. As noted by Michael J. Mauboussin in his HBR issue on ‘Embracing Complexity’
