- “We must act. We must act knowing that our work will be imperfect. We must act knowing that today’s victories will be only partial, and that it will be up to those who stand here in four years and 40 years and 400 years hence to advance the timeless spirit once conferred to us in a spare Philadelphia hall.” – President Obama, 2013 Inauguration
President Obama has stood before the United States and the world twice in the past month, and both times, themes of embracing failure to forge progress resounded.
- “In fact, no laws, no initiatives, no administrative acts will perfectly solve all of the challenges I’ve outlined tonight. But we were never sent here to be perfect. We were sent here to make what difference we can — to secure this nation, expand opportunity, uphold our ideals through the hard, often frustrating, but absolutely necessary work of self-government.” – President Obama, 2013 State of the Union Address
As I have always argued, it takes a strong leader to embrace failure.
